Great new book for startup founders and investors: "Pattern Breakers", by Mike Maples, Jr and Peter Ziebelman. Based an an analysis of many highly successful startups that Mike invested in over the last 20 years.
Provides clear elements as predictors of scalability potential, like:
* Inflections: changes in the outside world, which open up new opportunities. Could be a technical change, like high-speed mobile networking, or an environmental change, like global warming, which leads to the need to adopt wind, solar, EVs etc.
* Insights: A unique understanding of how to make use of these inflections and enable a future that the founders believe in.
* Ideas: A product or service based on these unique founder insights.
* Founder-future fit: Why are these founders the best people to turn these ideas into a succesful company.
There is a lot more in the book, which I now use to assess every investment opportunity.
If you don't have enough time to read the book, I recommend to listen to the excellent interview at Lenny Rachitsky's podcast of July 7, where he interviewed Mike Maples.
The book is also available in audio form, with the voices of the authors, which gives it an extra touch. Good for long car rides and holiday. Have fun!
